Dr Saumitra Chakravarty is a Professor and Head of the English Department at VVS First Grade College, Bangalore, India. She is a gold medallist from Calcutta University. Her PhD thesis was on The Search for Identity in Contemporary British Fiction (1950-70). She has presented papers in several national and international seminars and has been co-coordinator for a British Council project in two volumes, on the Effect of Translations in Kannada Literature (1750-190o and 1900-2000), co-sponsored by the University of Warwick. She has two books to her credit, the first, a volume of poems, The Silent Cry, and the second, a volume of critical essays entitled The Endangered Self (co-authored with Dr S Ramaswamy). Her book of translations of 15 short stories on women's issues by five prominent Bengali women writers is currently under publication by the Oxford University Press. Her articles have been published in several national and international journals.
